An Art & Tattoo exhibition is being held at the Monsopiad Cultural Village, every Friday to Saturday for the month of October. For the people of Borneo, Tattoos are a part of our culture and tradition. While modern tools have almost replaced all traditional methods, ancient tribal patterns are not forgotten. Flora and fauna motif passed down from generations are still being used till today.

Some people display tattoos to celebrate or memorialize a significant point in ones’ life and at other times, to commemorate a loved one, may it be name(s) or even an illustration of a person. Though these times in history are not depicted using words, rather they are more like etchings using designs of places and dates which only the person that received the tattoo would know the meaning behind them.

Here, a Tattoo artist is inking a Chinese character for a customer.

Those that exhibit their tattoos regardless of age and/or ethnic backgrounds mostly prefer designs that somewhat depict their personality. Usually these types of tattoos are represented using Japanese and Chinese characters or even illustrations of animals or even mythical creatures which are diverse in every culture known throughout the world. Characters or designs using different languages or inspirations are not unheard of and it mostly depends on the recipient of the tattoos and the tattoo artist.

Tribal patterns are also famous due to the fact that its origin is widespread across the world. To name a few the Berbers of Tamazgha, Ainu (indigenous people from Japan) and Maori of New Zealand have been known to have facial tattoos though these days you rarely see those types of designs. It is also known that tattooing were also widespread among the Polynesian peoples and numerous tribal groups from Borneo, Philippines, Mentawai Islands, North America, Africa, Cambodia and Micronesia just to name a few.

Regardless of where or when the art of tattooing came into widespread popularity, you’ll find that Borneo is never short of places to get your ink from. With much diversity in ethnicity and multifarious in its history and culture it is an opportunity not to be missed if you ever find a chance to come here and get a tattoo done by some of our very talented local tattoo artists.

Here we meet again..

After 4 days of great Raya trip, I’ve been brought to the south of Lahad Datu where we visit ‘Pantai Bakapit’, not many people knows about this beach as the beach was quiet popular back 40 years ago..

Bakapit beach situated around 35km from Lahad Datu town.. as you can see the view along the journey there are palm plantation all over..

Along the road, we passed the Tabin Wildlife Reserve signage and it was just 27km away to Tabin, the place where you’ll find mammals + birds and orangutan only in Lahad Datu, KK we have one something like this, Lok Kawi Wildlife Park. Pity… the road to Tabin are totally not accessible and that’s why we didn’t go further otherwise I would have another article about this Tabin already..

Before you reach Bakapit beach, you have to passed by this kampung.. Kampung Bakapit.

For the last 40 years, most people who live here are fisherman but now some of them worked in a factory around and some got a job in Lahad Datu city and some worked in the palm plantation.

People who live here are Bajau, Bugis, Suluks, Idaan and some are Tidung.

Now.. arrive at Pantai Bakapit.

The place was small, no commercial beach activities around it’s just an unforgotten beach merely speaking.

Pose of the day… Treng! Teng! Ten! Tenggg!

Local kampung boys, hanging around the beach tryin to get some peaceful mind..

from left : Omen, wife, Pipang, the most sporting mother in law

View towards the Celebes Sea..

after the short visit to Pantai Bakapit we went back to the city for Hari Raya open house invitation around the city

Got home almost 11pm, but the night still young and It’s not late to play the mercun.. This mercun Made in Thailand, the sound was really super superb, especially when you blow this thing in the midle of the night.. He! He!

On the night I’m sending my wife to airport, I pass by the Meruntum and managed to snap some few pics on the Pesta Air Putatan 2007 which held at Pantai Meruntum Putatan. These Pesta Air has been celebrated by the nearest locals from putatan, petagas, kinarut and papar since about 5 years ago, now everyone are coming from around western part of Kota Kinabalu.

Only this year they have moved to a new spot which much bigger about 2 km from the previous spot and now they have a new + better stage for proper show.

I love the host on that night.. our brother si Ampal! Sorry for the shot I took which a bit dark, the lighting man on the stage did’nt get the spot light on!

These are among the VIP that comin that night.

The first one who showed up for the show that night was the Kumpulan Gambus Tunas Harapan Kg. Laut Papar.

They have performed well that night i might say.. really make me kembang bulu.

The gambus played are very soothing + marvellous, well done!

and these two lady singer have a very good vocal, I wonder why they dont go for Akedemi Fantasia audition.

especially the girl, really have a powerfull voice.

bulih tahan la durang ni main..

The tall one was not bad with her vocal also.

The highlight on that night was a Karaoke Compettion, there are about 10 finalist battling up against each other for the Pesta Air Karaoke champion 2007 edition. This fellow here came from Putatan and he loves Hip Hop very much.

The second finalist who showed up sang a classical song.. Jangan Tingal Daku. Could’nt get his name, a veteran wearing a baju kilat-kilat.. must be otai-otai kenduri kawin di kampung nih!

Third one, this one smart Kota Belud fellow, sang a traditional song.. Pasir Roboh. (never heard this song before)

and the fourth finalist was this girl, really a Siti Nurhaliza’s voice look alike. Wow!! KK pun ada Siti wooo..

when the show getting really interesting I did’nt wait until the end of the result but I’ve managed to snap only 4 finalist that night as the raining getting heavy..

Mitsubishi Lancer also got!!

But I think, this EVO is more powerfull for rally since its a good 4WD machine.

Besides Trueno, there also Super Car class, brand new Mazda RX8.

There are almost 10 of these Mazda RX8, wahh!! kaya-kaya urang-urang KK nih!

Only one which catch my eyes wide open!! Power tuuu.. GT Wing, Sport Rim (mcm 17” ja), tinted pun mafia woo!

Aik! This one pun mau drift ka!

There are also Scooters… ndak mau ketinggalan jugak!

Hmm!! must be the UMS student owned this cute scooter, quite creative ba urang-urang sabah nih!

The next day of Raya, I brought to visit many raya open house around town for makan, makan and makan and makan, untill I can’t even stuck anymore food to my 6 piece stomach.. brupp!!

followings are some food that I managed to snap while I still can..

This one call ‘kacang tapuk’.. don’t ask me what kind of name or how did this kuih got its name..as the one who make this kuih also don’t have any idea, maybe that’s because the inner part they put sweet peanut inside.

Everbody knows this one, <strike>kuih ndak bertapuk</strike>.. no just kidding, kuih baulu

Kuih Sapit , well known among Sabahan..

but maybe not this one.. Kuih Sapit segitiga version

Sup Banjar, also one of the famous sup in town.. but I still prefer Sup Kondro

Not all houses in lahad Datu are kampung house type, here’s one modern type house that we wrongly step in since we got the wrong address..

but Lahad Datu folks were nice people when they even serve us food + drinks even though they knew we lost (ceh! malunya)

I stumble on this <strike>horny</strike> horns flower call ‘Bunga Terkini’ from one of the house that I visited that day.

According to the locals, the horns can make you paralyzed in instant if you really got into the horns deeper. I don’t know, never try before.

Also comes with White flower.. I don’t really sure if someone got one like this back in KK, never seen one.

After about visiting 10 raya open houses + full over dos stomach, we went to the city to the next location, Bus station.

Manage to snap some photos during the drive around town. This the new building of Magistrate Court of Lahad Datu, looks slightly bigger compare to the one we have back in KK.

Klinik Kesihatan Lahad Datu, quiet old building, situated not far from the city and main hospital.

Arm forces..

How come we don’t have this kind of Statistic Billboard in KK..

Arrive at the station bus cum not really a station bus.. There’s only few bus company offering the inland transport to KK at the moment.. Dyna Express

and this one, couldn’t manage to get its company name.

Bus ticket for inland trip back to KK will cost you around RM60 one way and that is way much expensive compare to one way air flight ticket to KL at RM9.99 with AirAsia.. Hah! Hah!

It was so hard for you to find taxi around Lahad Datu, but you can get cheaper rate with this well known ‘Pirates’. This pinky red ugly kancil will cost you around RM2 – RM3 for one way trip to the city from a distance of 15km..

Sori.. will be back to next post.. tengah malam suda nih! mau tido.

Ok now lets continue… after me + wife arrived at Lahad Datu, we stayed at Taman Warisan where my father in law stay.. next visit was going to visit the grave at Jalan Segama, Batu 1. The journey took about 15 minutes to reach there from the city.

This was the grave of wife’s grandmother, she’s was a pure chinese converted to muslims. The wife was her very da manja grand daughter (jgn kasi tau urang ha!)

from left : Raihan, Ijan, Pipang, Wife, Omen.

The main entrance to the grave yard. This place was claimed to be around since 50 years ago..

View from the inner part.. Curik-curik ambik gambal..

Some might find this place quiet strategic for selling Icecream, me.. no!. This old man was scarry, the way he look at you and how he sorrowfully shout…

Done with the horror part.. Now the next visit was Kampung Sharif (not Sarip, Samsing Kg. Dusun yah) located at ‘Pulau’. Normally ‘Pulau’ in malay means an island, but this place was actually inland.

Here’s how this place got the name as ‘Pulau’

As what you can see, from the whole area covered with sea and now this place covered with lots of kampung houses.

Kg. Sharif.. the place was quiet relaxing, lots of coconut tree around, nice scenery.

Typical inland kampung house in Lahad datu. This was the house of my father in law’s sister, the husband was the kampung chief aka ketua kampung.

View from the inner part.. Such a quiet interesting art the folks had on their house ceiling isn’t it..

Never seen this kind of ceiling, normally people put a crafted plaster ceiling on their house not like this one.. they put their own creativity towards their living.

Another fine quality art they have.. hand made rotan ‘buaian’. Usually used for practising your vocals the time you trying to get a baby sleep.

Posing ala model kampungan la kunun.. peewit!!

Move on to another house where my father in law used to play around while he was one jajal fellow during his glorious years back in the 50′s.

Spotted one good reason why people call Sabah…

… Land of The Headhunters.. uwek!!

Now move to the makan-makan part.. After a short visit at Kampung Sharif, we now move to sister in law’s friends house at Taman Aman, a modern housing area situated about 10 minutes from the city for Raya visit. Here we’ve been serve to one of the finest Soup in town.. Behold.. ‘Sup Kondro’

‘Sup Kondro’ formerly came from the Sulawesi and ate by the Bugis. ‘Kondro’ actually stand for chicken or ayam in malay, Here in lahad Datu, the Bugis people are 15% of the population and the Majority would be the Suluks.

This one call ‘Buras’.. actually is a cooked rice covered with pandan leaf and normally eat with Sup Kondro. But the taste is nothing like an ordinary rice since it was cooked with firewood.

Here’s another types of Buras, a sweet ‘Pulut’ covered with banana leaf.

This was my Lunch of the day… Usually I don’t eat soup, but that day i finished 3 bowls of Soup Kondro.. slurppp!!! The one who cook the soup is a Bugis herself, name Timah, still young, perawan + bujang.. pity she don’t want me to take her pic, this girl really can cook!!

Now we stop here till meet again..mangantuk suda nih!

and the Blue boat was the champion.

lucky I manage to snap this champ. Colin Jelf, this year was his second F2 power boat championship. This guy really fast!

but today was not their lucky day.

The main entrance to the park.

You’ll notice there’s are lots of Borneo flowers + orchids planted outside of the main entrance.

The first wildlife animal will you spot on the park was this ‘talking bird’, say Hello! the bird will reply ‘ellloo’ . Vernacular Name : Hill Myna / Family : Sturnidae / Species : Gracula religiosa

Another talking bird, (Common Name : Blue & Gold Macaw/Family : Psittacidae /Species : Ara araucanabut) this two fellow was really quiet that day, very serious, does’nt move at all, seems like a toy. “Burung kakak tuaa..Hingap di jendelaa..”

Another species of bird placed in the same cage.

When move forward, you’ll find a huge + tall bird cage, where you can find the famous Hornbill, (I have to zoom further up for this shot)

Peacock..

…Turtle?? what is he doing on the bird cage??

Further up you’ll find a place perfect for the kids, where your kids can ride along with the baby elephant for 2 rounds.

Well maybe I was wrong.. the parents can ride along too.

The baby elephant was around 6-7 years old.

Does he look familiar!! tapi dimana yaah (‘I Know What You Did Last Raya’)

When you move along, you’ll find more elephants, a family of 5.

Further up, you’ll meet the bear..

Next come to the place where you will meet up with the Malayan Tiger..

The Malayan Tiger can grow up to 2.84m long and 1.37m high, and the weight beetwen 150-195kg. (uihh berat jugak woo!!)

There are two options for you to watch this tigers, 1. is from the upper part where you can watch the tigers clearly from the top.. or you can even jump down.

2. or you can watch those tigers with a better view at the lower part covered with solid glass.. err I prefer upper part!

Normally when you say Orangutan, it only found at Sepilok, Sandakan.. but now in Kota Kinabalu the wild man of Borneo is here! Hooreyyy!

There are 4 orangutans that i found here that day at the park.

There are no cage or fence what so ever along the orangutans cages, but I found there’s a small man made lake surronding the area. Hmm.. I can imagine how long that the orangutans have not taken their shower..

A better view from the top of the small hill on the park.

There’s one small waterfall you’ll found on the way to the Proboscis monkey cage.

Like the others, the proboscis monkey are also stay in the cage.. who says you can only find the proboscis at Sukau and Gerama!!

Sometimes the Proboscis monkey can become more like a celebrity, except they dont know how to write a signature.

On some other occasions, the park ranger will take the proboscis monkey out from their cage to get close with the peoples.

Errr, but not this close… Hey you!! monkey! that’s my wife you’re flirtting on! Jaga kau ahh!!

Besides… The Burung kaki panjang yg ndak bulih terbang pun ada..

This is the entrance to the biggest bird cage I’ve ever found.. but pity, at this time my camera battery is getting low.

…and this is the time that my camera was totally out of battery..
